About
The story takes place in the distant future at a time when colonies thrive inside the larger asteroids of the Solar System. One such colony, called Aurora, elected long ago to break free of the Belt in order to avoid a hostile takeover by the Asteroid Collective. Now on a journey to a distant star system, it will be several hundred years before they reach their destination. With limited resources, the only way for the colony to survive to is to minimize population growth and maximize vocational skills by demanding that inhabitants remain in “families” of occupations.
The main character is 16 year-old Ramis, the son of Aurora’s current leader. Ramis struggles with self-perceived incompetence and finds his necessarily restrictive life and predetermined future unbearable. The young leader-in-training and his closest friends, Kayla and Jolvin, find an alien device that can change matter into any other substance, providing unlimited resources from the asteroid material itself. But before they can use it for the betterment of the colony, an agent, long ago “planted” by the Asteroid Collective, steals the device and is determined to return the colony to the Solar System or destroy it.
Unexpectedly, an uncharted star is discovered that is directly in Aurora’s path. Preventing attempts to navigate around the star, the agent manages to take over the colony with the help of the alien device. Ramis’ father is imprisoned while the agent proceeds to win over the colonists in an attempt to have himself declared the rightful ruler of Aurora. Finally, Ramis and his father dispose of the agent, and save Aurora from plunging into the star.
A habitable planet is discovered within the previously uncharted star system, however, a majority of the colonists are neither willing nor able to migrate to it. Seizing the chance of a lifetime, Ramis convinces his father to allow him and a small group of people to start a new colony on the planet. As he begins his new life, Ramis realizes his destiny was far different than what he had expected.
